There are some simple skills that help us live happier lives

Unfortunately many of us grow up without learning them.  This page provides an explanation of some of these skills that Dolly taught me.

I had read about them and understood them but Dolly really pushed them home.

I hope with her help I can do the same for you, so that you can use them to make your life happier.

Gratitude

There are so many things in life that we take for granted everyday in the Western world.

Things like:-

Hot and cold running water.

A safe place to live.

Food to eat.

Heating and lighting.

Our phones, tablets etc.

We never think to be grateful for these things but we should because there are many people who do not have these things.

Being grateful for the good things in life can completely change the way we feel.

Self Love

We spend our whole lives criticizing ourselves, but we are not taught that we are the only person who should really love ourselves.

We look outwards to be loved but why should other people love us if we cannot love ourselves?

We are all wonderful in our own uniqueness.

Belief

Belief is another skill we are brought up to be almost ashamed of.

Some of us are ridiculed for our dreams and we lose our ability to dream.

If we do not believe we can achieve things or can do things we will never do them.

Belief is very important for moving forward.

Overcoming Fear


It is surprising how much we fear in our lives.

The one thing we often fear though is our success.

It is amazing how many people have a mental block when it comes to being successful and we can even subconsciously sabotage our own success.

This can be related to our lack of self belief that we can succeed, but it can also be our subconscious fear of our success.

This can also go hand in hand with a fear of change because if we suddenly become successful things will change. We worry our friends won.t like us any more, or we won't have time for our loved ones.

Setting Boundaries

We all have physical and emotional boundaries but we are not taught about them as we grow up.

Boundaries are usually conveyed by body language, but that is another life skill we are not taught,

This means that we can be very unclear where our boundaries are and if we are not consistent with protecting our boundaries then other people will not know where they are.

This can cause a lot of upset and animosity.

Finding Your True Self

We often spend our lives doing things to satisfy others or to be what they think we should be. This is Ok if we are agreeing to compromise, but quite often we are doing it to please people because we don't want to offend or disappoint them.

Among this we can often lose ourselves and forget our dreams. WE become what others think we should be and this is a major cause of stress as we are living a life we don't really want

Making Plans

We very rarely make plans of how we want our life to be.

Oh we plan for holidays and celebrations, but how many of us actually sit down and think about where we want to be in five or ten years time.

We tend to assume we will still be where we are now and accept that even if it is not a good place.

So we probably are still there five, even ten years later unless something external has happened to change things.

We never think that we can change things by making plans for our life
